SE Vision 2035 Released

This week I received my hardcopies of INCOSE‘s Systems Engineering Vision 2035 booklets. I am proud to have made contributions as part of the Vision 2035 support team and I think it has really turned out to be a very informative and inspiring outlook on the future of systems engineering.

Clearly, there is strong consensus that model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and pervasive further digitalization, are expected to become even more prominent, essential really, to successful development of complex systems. This also includes advanced system-level analysis and simulation founded on top of much more sophisticated model and information exchange among all participating disciplines. In the end it is all about equipping systems engineers and their organizations with methods, tools and standards:

  • to manage and master complexity by providing consistent, reliable, dynamically updated views of a system as a whole and any drill-down into its details, and,
  • to coordinate between all needed disciplines and facilitate integrated team collaboration at a much higher pace.

Here team spans across organizations, including active collaboration between customers and suppliers. Since quite a while, my MBSE mantra has been “Getting the right version of the right information to the right team member at the right time” … The methods, tools and standards must be effective in practice, which means: reliable, easy-to-use, founded on formal semantics to make them interoperable and evolvable, and they must scale to handle full-size industrial projects. Now, there’s a challenge.

The booklets describe many worked examples of how we envisage things will evolve in the coming 10 to 15 years, in a nice and easy-to-read format.
